The San Diego Clippers are a G League Basketball team associated with the LA Clippers NBA team. They moved to Oceanside’s Frontwave Arena from Ontario California in 2025.

Kid Condor was an interesting mascot…

Because I have several siblings who are or have played competitive basketball, I was excited to check out our new local basketball team. I’ve seen a few Celtics games in person at the TD Garden in Boston, but had never been to a G League game. The new Frontwave Arena is a great, small-size venue. I was impressed with the relative affordability of getting 2nd row seats for the game. Clearly, they have been struggling to get attendance numbers up. But it seems like a great place to play.

The game was entertaining and competitive. Since I have watched quite a bit of basketball, it was easy to get engaged even without knowing the players. The opposing “Remix” team (associated with the Trailblazers) had some very tall centers who gave the Clippers some trouble. But the Clippers did a good job of driving to the hoop, giving themselves more shooting opportunities.

I noticed a few rule variations I was not aware of. The most notable was the “2-point free throw”. I think it’s an attempt to speed up the game by taking one free throw instead of two. There were also several contested fouls, which I think may already be an NBA rule but not one I’d seen.

Yum, tri-tip…

It was cool to check out what Frontwave arena had to offer. Some of the food vendors had their secondary locations closed, but I was excited to have a “Cardiff Crack” tri-tip sandwhich from Seaside Market. The local grocer also has a stand at Petco Park and is known for great food, though it was a bit pricy. There was also a merch stand which was tempting. If I return, I might want to get some official Clippers gear.

The broadcast was professional and well run. We sat behind the benches and could see the interviews and game reviews taking place. It was cool being close to the action and seeing how everything is run. The game was also broadcast by ESPN, though I’m not sure how many people are tuning in to watch considering how empty the arena was.

Compared to the Seals lacrosse game, the entertainment was much more modest. Several local children’s dance classes performed turing timeouts and at halftime. I wasn’t expecting much but they were great performers. During the breaks they had court-side interviews with several track and field athletes. I didn’t understand the connection or why they were featured but it was cool to see the event hosting other athletes.

I would definitely consider coming back to see another Clippers game. It is a great venue and good basketball. Minor league teams suffer from the “good players get promoted” problem so I’m not sure how much I’ll follow the team. But it’s a fun event and fairly close to home. There are also 3 other sports teams that play here so I’m sure I’ll be back.
