The book is written with a good mix of personal story and cultural commentary.

Heavily focused on skills needed for biblical literacy. I’d summarize the main argument that many of the major criticisms of Christianity are issues with Christians interpreted parts of the Bible literally that were never meant to be literal. He attempts to correct how that plays out in people’s beliefs about God. He recognizes many of the complexities and confusing parts of scripture, often admitting how he struggled them. It’s a short book so the author doesn’t give full explanations for every challenging part of the Christian worldview. But the author doesn’t hide from the questions.

There’s a large section on the problem of evil that asserts that God’s power is limited by his choice to allow free will to both human and spiritual beings. He also challenges the marriage of politics and Christianity in America as well as hypocrisy in the church while arguing those human failings don’t negate the work of Jesus. Finally the author challenges Christians to accept the difficult call Jesus makes on their life as necessary to the Christian life.
