My brother and I made these from Joy Food Sunshine for my father’s birthday party. It is a recipe that ranks high in Google search results and for good reason. The original website has a useful scaling tool too. One recommendation I’ll second is using parchment paper so you can remove the cookies from the sheet before they cool.

We were very short on baking supplies and mixed everything by hand. They turned out great though we had to extend the baking time slightly which could have been due to the oven temperature accuracy. We also struggled to get the chocolate chips evenly distributed in the mix so the earlier batches were a little short on chocolate. If you mix properly that shouldn’t be a problem.

If you are looking for a slightly richer flavor, try Brown Butter Chocolate Chip Cookies which starts by browning the butter.

Summary

  • Prep Time: 15 minutes
  • Cook Time: 10 minutes/tray
  • Servings: 36 cookies

Ingredients

  • 3 cups flour
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 cup (1 stick = 1/2 cup) butter
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup light brown sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 tsp vanilla
  • 2 cups chocolate chips

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. In a medium bowl mix flour: 3 cups, baking soda: 1 tsp, baking powder: 1/2 tsp, and salt: 1 tsp.
  3. Soften butter: 1 cup (1 stick = 1/2 cup) and cream together with granulated sugar: 1 cup and light brown sugar: 1 cup.
  4. Beat eggs: 2 and vanilla: 2 tsp together till even and light and mix with sugar mix.
  5. Combine the mixed ingredients before adding chocolate chips: 2 cups (2 cups = 12 oz).
  6. Line 3 baking sheets with parchment paper.
  7. Roll dough in about 2 Tablespoon size balls and place evenly spaced on the cookie sheets with room for the cookies to spread slightly.
  8. Bake for approximately 8-12 minutes until they just start to brown. When pulling out of the oven, consider rotating which shelf the sheets are on so the cookies cook evenly.
  9. Let the cookies cool for about 5 minutes before moving to a cooling rack.

It helps to have proper mixing bowls and spoons rather than tupperware and a ground meat chopper but you make do with what you have.

Making these in a college dorm was a challenge to remember 😄
