Guajome Regional Park
A park with some ponds, nature trails, and campground. Can get hot in the summer but some of the trails have good tree cover. Paid parking for the main lot, though there is a small free lot across the street closer to the bike path.
Whelan Lake Bird Sanctuary
It’s a former dairy farm that’s been turned into a sanctuary. It’s on the north side of Oceanside but only open by appointment or with a monthly opening with the Buena Vista Audubon. Usually has a variety of ducks and songbirds.
Libby Lake
A small neighborhood pond, but consistently has an array of waterfowl and gulls.
Buddy Todd Park
A nice inland viewpoint over the city of Oceanside. It’s an active neighborhood park with lots of tree cover. Not huge, but lots of locally common species.
Bonsall
Bonsall Preserve
An unassuming park up the San Luis Ray River. It was a former golf course, with some playgrounds and fields under construction. But the western end is completely undeveloped. Some of the original paved paths remain and there are many trees doting the grassland. The bridge under the road is the main area with accessible wetlands which sometimes yields some interesting birds.
