First Greater Yellowlegs - Island in the Net
The captain called out. “Greater Yellowlegs”.
The Greater Yellowlegs was standing just beyond the reach of the tide, poised in the way only shorebirds seem to manage—tense but not nervous. I noticed it shortly after we had passed the Black-bellied Plover and before the boat curved toward the inlet. This part of the route, somewhere along the back edge of Jarvis Sound, felt quieter, less dramatic than the open bends near Scotch Bonnet. But that quiet gave me space to notice the smaller moments.
